I didn’t want to send this as reply but someone was ickd by the display of racism in this, but and so-

Since it’s not official translations and it’s not complete I don’t want to put my foot in my mouth, but so far I would say from the context of this story it’s well written racism.

Seeing the tribe’s lifestyle and attitude it’s like so obviously more welcoming and peaceful than the kingdom. 100% -these frenchies calling the tribes barbaric is PROJECTION. Just like real life!!!!

It’s actually so realistic that it made me happy for once??? Indigenous people of America visited Europe not long after the initial settler colonies and were absolutely appalled, like “why are there so many poor people???? Why do you have to worship a king that does evil??? Do you not take care of the elderly, the sick, and the disabled?”

They went back home and told there people to be wary of these so called “civilized” nations.

Colonizers to indigenous peoples: you don’t have permanent housing???? Wow you’re so backwards

Indigenous peoples: we’ve made housing like that before but it’s inconvenient and bad for the environment and the environment is important, like really important like if you don’t change the way you treat the environment it’ll kill ya.

Europeans: wow you’re so savage

Indigenous : ….. your descendants will disparage you, and turn to us when the world falls apart.

Settlers descendants of Europe: it’s true. Climate crisis is here and now we have to undo Settler Colonialism, and create an ecological minded society. Study Youth and Queer Liberation, Disability Justice, and Abolition!

Remember kids while it’s fun to read gay shit, you gotta decolonize your hearts and minds too!

Thank you for voicing my thoughts bc when I went into the comments I was feeling left out n confused by some people’s reaction claiming that the story is racist when for me it’s just racism that is written in a story...

Regardless of this, their intent goes out the window when they write a story about a colonizer and indigenous person falling in love

Nah, that’s an ahistorical take, because it happened a lot. I would really recommend reading the first chapter of the Dawn of Everything by Graeber and Wengrow in its entirety,( this one chapters really clears up a lot of misconceptions)

But if you don’t have time for that

Near the end of page 17 on the link, the story of Valero is explored, the chapter is a whole critique on how westerners/colonizers are told and lied to that if given the choice a rational person would choose “civilized” society over indigenous tribal living. When the historical truth is that many joined indigenous societies and lived happier lives there.

If you keep reading eventually you get to a letter by the Benjamin Franklin whose surprised by how often everyone chooses indigenous society over colonial America

But here’s a big nation, that your comment basically dismisses

The Métis are an Indigenous people in Canada who are recognized for their unique culture, language, history, and way of life:
    Origin
The Métis are descendants of unions between First Nations women and European fur traders in the late 1700s.
    Culture
The Métis developed their own culture, traditions, and languages, such as Michif. They also developed a unique political and legal culture with strong democratic traditions.
