It's because of his own insecurities. It's hard to just admit those types of things in a new relationship. He wants to be able to spoil her like any other noble wife would be and more so to make up for the fact that he isn't one. He's too blinded by his goal of giving her a cushiony life to see how happy she is in adapting into being a knights wife instead of a nobles wife.
