Sorry, I woke up really late today so I was definitely going to forget.
Basically, it was actually Jiwon (Nigel) who got stuck in a time loop while retaining memories first. He went through it thousands upon thousands of times trying to find all of the endings and became more and more twisted as time went on. He fell in love with Inas and he is the one who started the whole “I love you so I’m killing you” thing because he was the batshit insane one.
After finishing a certain percentage of the endings (99.9 or 99.99) he received a reward called sacrifice, which would allow him to pawn off his awful time loop to another user. Users are explained in one of the following chapters, but basically users are people with abilities capable of dimensional travel, and only one should be in any world at any given time. Jiwon fell into a world that already had a user, Inas (which is why the world is breaking)
This means the only person he could pass the time loop shit onto would be Inas, but he couldn’t do it because he loves Inas. Inas finds out and volunteers to take it on for Jiwon (Nigel’s) sake, and when he does, his memories of past sessions are basically replaced with fake Nigel’s, and fake Nigel’s memories are suppressed which makes him into another Nigel that made og Nigel feel so out of place that he became Glaurus incarnation (representative basically?) to stop feeling so wrong all the time leaving fake Nigel in his body believing he has always been Nigel.
The time loop is actually because of both Inas and fake Nigel, because their user abilities merged, with Inas’ being time control, and fake Nigel’s being immortality.
All this to say that Chapter 40 is one of the chapters focusing on the time frame where fake Nigel was the one stuck in the time loop and killing Inas and then himself over and over
