He was actually giving her the book as a gift, and he only found out afterwards it was the book that killed her. He was trying to make excuses for why he killed her, out of guilt, I believe.

....so the princes mum abused him and so he killed her and not crown prince is like why would kill her...I'm just kinda not into the story now. It started out well then trailed off
