That's my favorite approach to toxic yaoi, when everything is horrible, but the love is there, worse, it is horrible BECAUSE the love is there. I think this is my favorite of them crazy MLs?? Don't get me wrong, he's danger encarnate lol, but since I already expect abuse in these power imbalanced period BLs, to see him mad at his own drunken actions was so refreshing! I love when love isn't synonym of goodness. This man clearly loves the MC, he hates how he hurt him, but he is still crazy and possessive, that's his love language, absolute control. He wants to control the MC, not hurt him, why would he want to hurt the man he loves? No, he just wants him to stay by his side forever and will do what he can to ensure that ML will have to choose to stay by his side. As if coersion makes it better. He still ends up hurting the MC in ways he himself didn't intend to or didn't even understand (like killing the MC's family, for him who killed his family to take the throne and who believes the MV will be happier by his side, that doesn't sound painful, just cutting lose ends) He's so very different from our usual crazy MLs who treat MC like a possession, never tried to woo them, don't care whether they are hurt emotionally nor physically, treats them as lesser. Not saying this ML is a green flag — he's not, he's the epitome of gatekeep, manipulate & mansplain —, but like… he loves him. It's horrible and sad and crazy and the only thing he produces is pain, but it's love nonetheless. Why would I want to read a story where the MC just gets raped senseless by men who don't even view him as a person (eg.: rofundis, potn), the fun in toxic DARK Boys Love stories is the toxic one being crazy about the other. Somebody gotta LOVE from the beginning and it's always better when the one loving is NOT the victim. It's kinda like when Hannibal gutted Will in a way that wouldn't kill him after being betrayed, or how Lestat let Claudia die but HAD to save Louis. Toxic yaoi is SO back.
