They're both in love with each other. Because MC rose in levels too quickly, the game developers changed the answer MC asked ML to be "I hate you" when it was really "I love you".
We'll actually see that in the upcoming chapters. Neither knows about this misunderstanding. It was hinted at previously when MC went into that limbo area with the doors.
