i get where you’re coming from, but i think there’s some nuances when it comes to the emperor+empress’ relationship. he firstly lied to her when marrying her and lead her under the assumption that he’ll have her kids, he basically wanted her family’s power without having to give himself to his wife. SA is, of course, not the answer - but i think that they do have a see-saw like power dynamic that goes up and down. he doesn’t regret marrying the empress because he gets to enjoy her lavish power, he’s also willing to have her kill his own family members so he can sit on the throne. all whilst neglecting and abusing his own child. like i get that the child of your abuser is bound to make the victim uncomfortable in any ordinary situation, but can a man as greedy and vicious as him really be called simply a victim? i don’t know. i certainly don’t think he was capable of being a good unconditionally loving father if he conceived a child consensually because he isn’t a good person in general. i think this has nuances for sure, but under any circumstances an adult should NEVER leave a child to their abuser. and the emperor knowingly did just that. which on top of all his other ‘“sins” makes me extremely unempathetic toward him, he’s just so damn pathetic imo. but each to their own ig
What he did doesn’t warrant rape from empress, not that you said that. Historical times, nobles will always want power so that’s to be expected. He’s still a victim regardless of what he did. There’s a reason why abuse cycles exist, not that it is any better. Raping is inhumane which I consider empress as horrible being, that is my only point.
I get what you’re saying though. Thanks to your viewpoint or perspective, I don’t fully believe that the father would be the best father but he would’ve at least fought for his son to get on the throne IF the son was someone he wanted in first place with consent.
I only listed why he is the way he is, but I don’t agree with his abusive behavior. I just think the empress is a horrible being, so is the father for doing that to MC.
I’m just saying that it’s kinda insensitive to call a victim, coward, when they’re a victim and going through struggles, clearly he’s one for a reason. The mental struggles is not considered by some readers.
I don’t have very much empathy for noble men and women, but anyone who does horrible acts like rape and abuse is not it.
I’m very sensitive when it comes to rape especially, so my hatred for the empress is higher. And because she forced a child to be born into a world of greed and rich/noble life, shitty dynamic father and mother.
And I’m not sure if the emperor knows that the empress was hitting their child/MC. That’s why he should’ve been there as a father regardless of what had happened to him. I can sympathize with him on the part where he was raped and led to this dynamic, but involving innocent child…no.

I swear I remember the father saying he didn’t want to marry the empress but let me know, I have not caught up to this fully or forgot lmao, last time I read was almost a year ago I think. Overall I do believe that the father is a shitty guy. I won’t justify what he did because of his trauma, but there is def a reason.
I mainly made this post towards those justifying the empress’s disgusting actions too or acting like she did better. Honestly there shouldn’t be competition, but we are human beings and we do this sometimes, I did for sure.

yep agree with everything you said! both the king and queen are just disgusting people in general for very different reasons - i think the queen to me is a default villain so her actions don’t shock me as much as she was introduced and continuously written as a genuinely horrible and monster-like person whereas the king, it feels like he’s deluding himself that he’s actually a good person and he tried to justify all his very horrible actions and that really angers me like in the latest chapter where he suddenly gets shocked that the empress might be abusing etienne even though he fully left her with him knowing she has abused them both and clearly has no plans of becoming a decent human he’s very self serving and pretends to care for others whilst also ruining their lives without a second thought. the villains who are the hardest to read for me are the ones that never think they are in the wrong :(

The Empress is a piece of shit mother. So is the father, but personally I can be more lenient on him compared to the empress who’s a fucking rapist and fucked his father’s mental state. Didn’t the empress beat MC? Forgiveness for neglect from both? No. But it’s up to MC if he forgives or not, personally I wouldn’t forgive or maybe I would with the emperor, but not forget.
Neglect is not it. I’ve gone through it myself, although my mother and I are much closer as I aged, she still struggles mentally. My mother was raped by father, and had me. She took it out on me, didn’t just neglect but beat me many times, compared me with other children. I never told anyone, not even my therapist. She does not hit me anymore though, so that’s nice. And she’s repented, a lot of shit happened, and just messy.
Do I forgive her? No. Why would I? I’m still hurt when I remember, but I remained to stay with her as she’s aging.
Just switch genders of the Emperor to Empress who was raped by the emperor. Obviously emperor is a coward when it comes to his son, but there’s clearly a defined reason: it’s his rapist’s child too.
It’s easy to tell him to not be a coward, but why expect that from a victim who’s not good around their rapist?

Just because he’s the emperor, a man, doesn’t mean he’s in full authority, there’s societal orders and parliament stuff, and the empress clearly has some influence too.
Telling a VICTIM to stand up to their perpetrator is crazy talk, I sense little to NO sympathy. I even read someone saying: Emperor MIGHT have been hurt by the empress, but…bah blah.

MC doesn’t deserve neglectful parents. He doesn’t deserve to be hated for being born from a rapist mother, and victim father. Children are innocent, and should not have to deal with these types of parents.

If I recall right, the MC kinda forgave the emperor I think in the novel, but they aren’t super close yet like father and son—it’s very slow even at the end and doesn’t really say more.
