The BLLK community is packed with glazers who worship the author and swarm any post that contains objectively valid critique. They’re the epitome of childishness, which is to be expected from the shounen retards.
In the beginning BLLK had me totally hooked. It’s been a while since anything from Japan gave me this kind of dopamine rush. I can best describe it as a mix of old gen plot quality with a modern distinct art, a combo that makes it the best new gen anime. And that’s probably because the male dominated studio’s refuse to pick up work by women and instead keep on picking up trash corn disguised as 13+ friendly which should be a crime.
BLLK felt like an exception, it pulls you in with great chars and an exciting plot. It’s solidly in my top 4 sports anime, though without the author’s rise in unnecessary desperation, it might’ve been my all time favorite. Now that seems unlikely.
At first, one very positive tell tale sign to me was the lack of female chars, sparing us from Japan's usual habit of reducing them to lesser humans.
Leaving me flabbergasted, author shifted this energy onto the male cast.
Isagi keeps rotating partners between all the pretty and feminine looking boys, making you think he’s a harem Mc.
And every other masculine char gets a partner that acts like a yandere boyfriend.
It’s just strange, I just wanted to enjoy the great chars (some) and story without all that. Still holding out hope the author might chill on this stuff.
I used to hate the overly masculine chars that resembles gorillas and I tbh still do, but all these twinks are also testing my patience. Just give me cool chars like isagi rin kaiser. Author doesn’t wanna bother writing them as interesting individuals with backgrounds that pack some depth, instead he relies on shipping culture.
I just had sm more to say and ur comment was a good outlet lol nvm my rant
Although I agree with most of your takes here, I have to interject on the "Kainess" part. The thing between these two characters wasn't exactly made for the sake of more ships for the fujoshis (god, they're so annoying), but it may seem like it on the surface. You'll see how one sided their interactions are if you reread the neo arc again and how that reflects on their characters.
Ness' backstory was revealed that he had always sought to make "magic", to make the "impossible come true". His codependency was deeply rooted within his character from the beginning (aka when he was a child) as he always chased after whatever could make that dream of his possible. That's when Kaiser comes in. He is aware of Ness' wants, and manipulates him in a way that is beneficial for his goal to become no.1, as all Kaiser truly wants is to be "loved", and to him that means he must prove himself.
Many people (especially fujoshis) misunderstand their dynamic and what it represents. Rather the typical "my world was boring before you" which can be interpreted as romantic, they're more psychological and messed up than that. Kaiser and Ness were both given proper backstories and personalities as to why their current relationship came to be. They were what Nagi and Reo failed to represent, and that is "toxic codependent relationships". So, even as I understand why you mirrored Kainess to Nagireo, I'd just like to point out the difference between them, and that's the intent between their duos.
(Disclaimer: I am not a kainess or nagireo shipper at all. I am well aware both relationships are toxic, albeit nagireo is more lowkey compared to kainess, but I just wanted to remind people that they're more than just supposed "fujoshi bait".)
Personally, I don't think there's a need to overanalyze fictional chars, as their behaviors and backgrounds are ultimately the author's will.
The issue lies in the fact that author himself pushes couple pairings. Whether the chars backgrounds were crafted to justify these dynamics or vice versa doesn’t really matter, as the two aspects go hand in hand.
With so many pairings in BLLK, it's only natural that some chars backstories will align more closely with their behaviors than others.
I’m focused on the broader narrative. Personally, I don’t look at BLLK for complex char writing to me it’s all pretty simple.
I don’t like what author has decided to do with so many of the chars. It reminds me of the stereotypical way female char backgrounds are often written, where their entire existence revolves around the hero.
To each their own though—I’m not here to criticize anyone who likes Ness or Reo for that matter. This is simply my objective critique of the author.
I understand your point of view and that this is your critique therefore your opinion, but "over analysing" characters is quite literally integral to any story in general. Yes, their true nature and intent lies entirely within the author's grasp but that doesn't mean room for analysation should be belittle nor pushed aside. That's how most literature reviews and interpretations came to be, including your critique itself, because despite you only seeing things on surface value and refusing to delve into the complexity of the characters, it still counts as a literary analysis.
If the characters personalities and backgrounds were meant to be treated lightly or nothing at all, why would the author go so far as to reveal their pasts, integrate their differing quirks and traits, and show dynamics between their interactions?
I'd like to add that although I can definitely see eye to eye why you dislike the idea of the author pushing "couples", I feel unfortunate to say that if you can't see past them and their dynamics as anything beyond the purposes you've stated, your mindset will just be restrained on the same level of that as a shipper (not to say shippers are bad or to say I'm belittling your perspective here). Just because two characters are pitted together won't always instantly make them new "ship fuel" as I've said in my previous comment. There are other duos I can state that go beyond potentially being branded as a ship (rin & sae, isagi & noa, bachira & his mother, nagi & barou, etc.)
Though I can agree with you for certain that Kaneshiro has surely wasted potential of other characters for the sake of the main cast, like you said. Then again, it's a common occurrence in most stories, we might as well make due with what we have since he was at least considerate enough to keep up with the consistency of a lot of important characters in the manga (I could go on a whole thesis compiling every one of them but it'd take too long to do). Not trying to justify the clear plotholes, just saying that it's a very difficult task to balance character potential whilst keeping track of the main story as a writer myself too.
(Final clarification: I've noticed my former interactions on the internet have caused misunderstandings due to my rambles, so I hope you won't take the things I've said to heart. Many tend to assume I'm arguing with them when I simply want to share my thoughts.)
I mentioned that I’m not particularly intrigued by the author’s writing abilities for most of the chars, which makes it difficult for me to connect with or like Ness. To me, he feels very surface level and intentional for the sake of shipping. Of course, everyone will have their own opinion about the chars, and that’s completely subjective. If you enjoyed how he’s written or didn’t mind it, that’s great. I feel rather neutral about him overall, the only ones I find annoying are Reo and the baldie lol. I did appreciate hearing your perspective.
Now that a good amount of time has passed and the honeymoon phase is over, certain issues in this manga are becoming more irritating with each passing chapter. The overuse of slang and this forced "quirky" dialogue has become so cheesy it's hard to tolerate. Initially, it was funny and somewhat relatable because the author used it sparingly, but now it’s taken over the entire manga, losing the charm it once had.
I've also grown increasingly annoyed with how blatantly author pushes those BL pairings, clearly to appeal to Fujoshi’s as a cheap attempt to boost his works popularity. He has massively overdone it, and I happen to dislike all of his fav ships. He’s admittedly a Nagi glazer, which reflects in Reo’s characterisation, and Ness with Kaiser, thus has led to both chars being reduced to insufferable simps with no nuance. I can’t stand seeing so much of them on my screen.
Nearly every char has been coupled up which is so overwhelming and they all share zero chemistry between them except for rinsagi n kaisagi. I generally only enjoy some ships involving the mc because due to sharing their perspective, it will naturally make sense and have me invested.
Sometimes it’s better to just leave it up to the fanfictions instead of being so desperate for the clout.
While this formula might be effective, I’ll always find it lacking in taste, especially to this extent.
