Riiiiight?!! it's so much better when it's like, palpable but not explicit or ever properly talked about. You can't deny what's going on and it shapes the entire plot but it's also not a plot point and you don't have to worry about silly misunderstandings. And the tension pre-romance is always so much better, it almost always feels bland or redundant once they actually get together.
I think that's why I have more fun with some bromance fanservice dramas rather than BLs, it always feels like pushing some boundaries and the bond (usually with some crazy devotion that goes against what they have always believed) always hits harder than typical romantic "I fell for you naturally/at first time" relationships do.
