The use of "former princess" & "former prince". Why??? Someone plz explain to me

I think it's because they're not the current emperor's children, but the previous emperor's. Making them the current emperor's half siblings.

I'm not quite sure how to address the previous monarch's children tbh. And seeing Elantz calling these children aunt and uncle is really funny to me
