It's a long journey, the first step for a new language is to make mental associations with it. Try memrise, it's a website and app that's essentially just flashcards. But it has difficulty levels for studying. Grammar wise you'll have to look elsewhere.
At least, I use it when studying new Spanish vocabulary. Albeit I already have years of formal schooling with it.
But any start is a good start.

i got some basic information from "abroad in japan" channel on youtube. he has a few videos on what books/sites you need for beginners. go to his older videos.
you can find recommended books on line for free (not legally but still)
and i don't think you will be able to understand just if you know the basics, because most stories targeted towards older audience (yaoi, seinen, josei) rarely have hiragana/katakana to help you to read it if you are beginner, so you will have to take your time and also learn some kanji.
it's a long journey as anon before me said.

just list his videos from oldest to newest and you will find them easier
but you can find a lot of more all over the internet
Since I want to read a lot of mangas that were dropped and read the new releases quicker do you have any suggestions for learning how to read Japanese from scratch? I just want to know the basics to understand what is going on. Thank you :)
