Hi can somebody tell me which time period this story was based on or took place in?

I am not sure about it, but I guess you can track the period because their mother saw a train for the first time.

Also, there is hate between Japaneses and Koreans, and as far as I remember, japaneses had a war where they did quite the crimes against Chinese's and Koreans.

If I am wrong please correct me :)
