It's because there is no conflict. Everything is just happening for her, and she is having no real internal conflict over anything.
Like, she knows there is a slave thing, and all she has to do is tell and show her father she doesn't like it, and he changes it. And while she does get hurt, instead of being in actual shock from both seeing her father try to strike someone and from it hitting her instead, she is no thoughts happy about saving Ivan.
Yeah. The only side character we saw the was maybe around her age, didn't have a character. There is also the most obvious problem that never got properly seen, at least up to where I stopped reading, which is CPTSD or Complex Post Trumatic Stress Disorder. I have and have had CPTSD, due to severe abuse during my childhood, and I can tell you that it is fucking heavy. Ivan, was snatched after running away, imprisoned, and tortured into compliance. He would not have been just a little salty after that. He would have had insomnia issues, likely would have developed an eating disorder (based on the fact they would not have been fed well during imprisonment), would have had severe anxiety, intense depression, disassociation, likely would have been dealing with some form of chronic physical pain (high levels of stress can cause that to happen), and he would, after being released, have ODD which is Oppositional Defiance Disorder.
He also would have hated being called Ruby. Ruby is a pet name. She knew he could speak, knew he was an intelligent species, and she not only chose to name him like a pet, but she never even asked his name once. She never asked him his name, instead continuing to call him what she named him. Same for the other person she named. She pets them, plays with them like pets, and thinks of them in the way of a person caring for an animal, only treating them, barely, like a person when she can use what they offer, like the Dr.
Don't even get me started on how none of the other characters act properly either. The author decided to basically wash away her father's crimes of fucking SLAVERY, by making sure Ivan's parents also owned human slaves.
I also feel like it is pretty stupid that the scientific name for shifters is the same for the shifters as it is for the humans. No attempts are made to reconnect the slaves of either species back to their original families. No one is held accountable for owning slaves. None of the peoples who were enslaved were ever shown to hold long lasting hatred or resentment. Despite the owning of each other's species as slaves, both nations weren't at war or even enemies, which is the only explanation as to why Ivan's father could simply walk into her home like that. Neither of the nations showed any of the wealth gaps that one would see if people were selling others as slaves. None of the slaves are seen until it benefits the plot. No one's original thoughts of the other species is ever held onto, which isn't realistic.
Sorry for this long rant, but the point is, this plot sucks ass. Not one character is acting how you would expect them to act in the situation. If you want a recommendation of some good isekai I have found, I got you. I will make another response with them after this one.
Facts! Also, here are some I found in my 407 titles in my reading tab. Yes, I do remember most of them. No, I don't know how.
Marriage of Convenience (adult regression, highly recommend). Has a real drama type narrative, but does get some great feel good moments that were worth the drama. I cried.
I'll be the Matriarch in this Life (adult to child regression, another high recommend). Is pretty well done so far, have hopes it won't fall into the trope of most child regressed isekai. It does have actual stakes, and the FL has to think.
Setting Sun Dazzled Eyes (no regression just amazing character writing, wait for better translations, extremely recommend). Definitely wait for better translations for this. I can't explain how much I actually love this story. Every single character matters. The FL is a "war hero" of a continent, and the story encompasses what it actually means to be that, by adeptly showing how others were affected by her actions. It is the best fucking thing I have read so far, and I beg you not to read it until it gets better quality translations. It is worth it.
I'm a Stepmother But My Daughter is so Cute (adult isekai). Haven't read super far into it, but I find it rather cute. The characters are pretty well written, and one of them was so well written I was actually shocked by the reveal. I had to find it on here so I could recommend it and keep reading it.
Queen Cecia's Shorts (adult to child isekai, good character writing, high recommend). Honestly really well done. The FL is disguised as a man to make clothing. They didn't regress into a novel or their childhood, they were simply isekaied. Goes through the struggles of being a woman and of being a man. I struggled to find this on here, but I really wanted to read more of it myself, and share it here.
Remarried Empress (no isekai, just good fucking writing, extremely high recommend). Is incredibly well written. FL is the empress and is dealing with her husband the emperor who has brought his mistress into their lives. It does have a lot of drama and power struggles, but is a very good read.
If you are fine with gay buff men, Sunny Days is fucking wholesome af. About a single dad who moves to the countryside to raise his baby girl, and falls for the village leader who is a fucking sweet potato.
If you would rather BL, My Guildmate Next Door, is a really good read as well! Man starts a new mmorpg and his guildmate turns out to be his next door neighbor. The plot is slower, but the interactions between both guys is actually solid and funny. Definitely recommend this so hard.
Last one I swear, How to Get My Husband on My Side (adult to teen isekai). This one is intense, and I do recommend it highly. The FL transgresses into a novel as the villainess. It does a lot with the phycology of victims, and is really worth the read.
Read most of these with all the trigger warnings, and I hope you end up enjoying one or all of these!
Lol! I can't tell you how many series I have popped off on, but I know bad writing when I see it! I am glad you enjoy my rants, cause when I saw how long they were, I was like, bitch, ain't no one gonna read this. I was apparently wrong!
Unfortunately, I don't have many child isekai that I can suggest, since most fall into the trope of, child is now useful therefore we love her. And I do mean her, as I have been hard pressed to find good child isekai with boys.
Not sure why... But i feel like this story is a bit flat from the story telling (BUT I LOVE THE ART :))
