Wild guess: Emperor also met god and gained eternal life or something similar (based on that zombie-like appearance). Emperor wants to die finally. Emperor gets to die as he gives his remaining years to our MC, who gets a normal lifespan.
OR emperor wants to live longer in a healthy body & hopes MC is his link to god.
However I believe in my original theory also because of how God and temple just up and disappeared on our MC (= you make a deal and cannot ever contact god again, even if you start regretting your choice)
