you put it so beautifully!!! it’s not action of hiding who he really was, it was the betrayal of the false identify shin found comfort in. the whole time he was betting on a life partner who’d truly understand him but was again disappointed by people in higher power who’d always have an advantage over him
Honestly I get Shin. Imagine being someone who lived in the slums all the while, running away from abusive family, having to work as a street mechanic to stay afloat. And then this "gangster" started taking interest in you, giving you protection, money, jobs etc...
Shin risked it all because he thought they were the same type of people -- people who are at rock bottoms, people who are struggling with life (in that case Jake being a gangster will be less of a choice but a means of life).
And it revealed that Jake was never a thug or at rock bottom. He was the only person in the relationship who's actually broken and pathetic.
