What's with people (that one dude lets be honest) hellbent on trying to pin all the blame onto Maxi?
Yes she's underqualified, but what choice did they have? If things had gone in an ideal manner, Riftan would have had Maxi go through some serious training before they went on their expedition instead of wasting time trying to find another mage. It was better to have someone who might have been a liability than to be without a mage entirely, they literally spell it out in the story.
So far Maxi actually hasn't done anything to hinder anyone. They never slowed down for her, no one was distracted tending to her needs. If anything, it's been shown she's being pushed to her limits but Riftan is still keeping to schedule and going about the expedition in the way he would have if she weren't there. The only difference is that she has people guarding her, but even then that hadn't caused issues so far.
You can criticize her for the way she keeps hesitating and falling back on her meek, self hating thoughts but that's her personality flaw. She needs to gain confidence, and so far, she hasn't actually complained much to anyone but to herself. I think she's done a good job of pushing through it despite her hesitations on how far she can push herself. And if anything, both her and Riftan need to focus on the task at hand and forget about their relationship drama, but that's literally the point of the story so,,,
