I read the novel and it didn't by any means make me beg for them to be together. The ending felt bitter, because she never completely recovers from what he did to her, yet they ended up together still broken.

True, it wouldn't be realistic to be fully recovered which is just sad.
There was this comment about the novel that talks about their hardships and this and that, but eventually we (the readers) are going to be begging for them to get back together and live happily ever after.
I don’t think the author or god can pay me to beg/pray for them to get together. ML is such a dick, I need the soldier from the frontlines to come and save my girl. ヽ(`Д´)ﾉ
