She is an uneducated small village girl who grew up doing manual tasks. I don't know why readers are expecting her to be smart educated girl. To be intelligent she needs to have proper food and education and she received neither. She's plain stupid and there's no doubt about it. She can only grow smarter through experience and knowledge.
Remember, a frog of a well doesn't know about ocean.
