Ian was much younger then... more immature and only did things that he could gain from.
Fast forward to his interactions with Jo now, I believe he gained in maturity and is trying to "do the right thing" but it's probably all warped because of all the trauma he's gone through. What feels "normal" to him is probably all trauma based. It's so hard to break the cycle when that's all you've known.
I'm not a fan of his behavior at all but I can't help but feel bad for him. Old Ian was lost and older Ian is still lost... let's wait and see how the author will spin this!
