For me it's a bit strange to hear it called distant relatives, since all my life I've had many of my "little cousins" around me. But thinking about it, it's really only from one side of my family, and would definitely consider the others more distant family than not.
I used "little cousin", since that's the English translation for what we call those relations (child of your parent's cousin) in my language. I believe the correct English term may be cousin first removed? Not sure, I looked it up yeara ago and may misremember.
So the old king and Judith's grandmother are brother and sister, so that would make their children Vanessa and Judith's dad first cousins, so that would mean that their children aka Jonas (Vanessa's son) and Judith and her sister are second cousins, and i don't know how it is in other countries but in mine a second cousin is considered to be a really close relative, but i see that for some counties it's different ╮( ̄▽ ̄)╭
In my country we have a law that we can marry a cousin only if they are separated bloodline up to 4th degree of consanguinity. Commonly, they allow second cousin marriages if they share a common great grandparent as it separate them upto 6th degree. But prior to the law being passed, there are cases where 1st cousins get it on with each other.
