What are your thoughts when people say?

"Its just fiction, if you dont like it, then dont read it"
- this kind of reply can be found when someone shares their criticism regarding an author's work and someone defend the story by saying its just fiction.

Either you agree or dont agree with the statement, I want to know perspective from different people to came up with better understanding in reading.
You can just personally message me regarding your opinion and I will not judge

I don't agree with "it's just fiction" I think criticism is good. What I don't like is people saying "This is bad bc I hate horror/poly/bi/cheating." When they went into something that was tagged with it, or it was in the summary or even clearly on the cover.

So when it wasnt implied in the summary or tagged? Do you think it is validated to criticize?

Not to criticise imo. Like if it's something you don't like and you didn't realise it would be something you don't like, why disparage it? You just say "oops, I messed up" and drop it.

Now, when do I think people should leave criticism? When the writing is bad or boring, or when the art is janky. For example, if the pacing is bad or if the ml's hand is the size of the mc's torso. Maybe it has contradictions in the world building, maybe there is no proper world building and it's just a lore dump. Etc., etc.

It’s more the intention behind the comment that shifts the perspective. Some can have good intentions and want to share knowledge to show others a different view, while others are just plain black and white with very shallow thoughts

    Depends in the situation lol
Like sometimes people need to stop crying and actually comprehend the statement.
I.e a supernatural story where person a can read the minds of everyone except their lover, (although they don't know they're lovers yet LMAO)
Some super nerd would go "It doesn't make sense! Why can they read the minds of everyone but not the one person they like!"
    Like...calm down Jamal...it's just fiction...we needed a plot..

Then there's other times where the characters are so UNBEARABLE.
Like they're the biggest of red flags and God forbid you complain and point it out.
Some mad blinded person goes "Relax. It's just fiction" LIKE YEAH IT IS. BUT THAT DOESNT MEAN I HAVE TO LIKE IT?

You can critisize a book you don't like if you think it could have been better. Like if you use rape every ten chapters to advance the plot it shows how poor your skills are in actually writing a story

It depends. I think people wouldn't hate so much in those stories if the problematic parts were well-written and not badly written romantisazation of shlt

    Thanks for everyone's info!!

I do understand your perspective and carry it while reading stories in order to not get in pointless fights!

My problem with the statement is typically how it’s used, especially on this site.
A lot of people tend to use it as a defence not of the story, but of themselves are their opinion, which shuts down any possible discussion that could have been had on any given topic.
Although in the grand scheme it’s relatively harmless, I can’t help but think “it’s just fiction” is a poor excuse for ignoring the opportunity to delve into problematic topics, and that “if you don’t like it, don’t read it” is obstructing certain viewpoints from entering the discussion

    What the— September 30, 2024 9:28 am

The problem with that statement (if you dont like it dont read) is that sometimes it is used inappropriately, like in cases where people do complain about how the story is going or stating opinions about characters but it doesn’t necessarily mean they do not like it, like bruh dont tell me what to do, i read what i want i react how i want kind of shii. But in terms of the “its just fiction”, it really depends and its more complicated since it is a subjective thing imo—some readers let fiction influence their reality, some people relate fiction and reality, some don’t, some are sound enough to choose in between, and some just read just because, like a “out of sight out of mind” kind of thing. All of us are different minds with different experiences, what you think should not be imposed to how i think, like, you can say whatever opinion u have however, you dont get to decide how i should’ve felt about what i read.

Hmmmmmmmmm, I say yes I agree with that statement. If someone enjoys a psychological story revolving around a killer and their physic, that doesn’t mean they support killers nor does it mean they want to become one.
-You can criticize a story but more often than not, will that really change anything, will that benefit anyone(especially on a site like this), even if you complain about a story. will that change the direction of the story. Will it even stop other mangas from doing rape, probably not. However I still do think it is good to tell other what the manga has like rape or noncon, as it lets other readers stay clear of those if they wish.
-Furthermore, About toxic love stories, I myself read those stories and will feel frustrated but also fascination and interest in how such a relationship can develop. I believe many people read these stories because they are dramatic and unrealistic. I can say this confidentiality because all popular manga has a seme who was trash then became better(BJ Alex) or have a seme who is trash completely but interesting(Roses and champagne). On the other hand more cute things are popular for a few months then are forgotten.(our sunny days, ect). Some of my favorites are those cute but forgotten stories but they disappear as quickly as new toxic stories show up.
-about immortal stuff (cheating, pedo, ect). To me, fiction is fiction, by crossing the line that this is real life and that is fiction is immoral. And everyone who does that should die and never see the light of day. But those who read simply to satisfy their curiosity and know their boundaries, I think it is fine. However, I do believe that what we read, does has an emphasis on who we are as a person. I myself, have red mangas with cheating and many other immoral things. But I have not and will never support those things but that doesn’t mean I’m not intrigued by them.
-if you red all of this I hope my opinion helped! ヾ(☆▽☆)
