Confusing

So it looks like these are supposed to be short stories, but the order of the chapters makes it weird, despite this type of order being common. Honestly it would’ve been better to only include yagami and hiromichi’s (second pair shown) story, with the addition of the couple from Tokyo in April. The reason why I’m saying this should’ve been about yagami and hiromichi, is because yagami was a character fully included in Tokyo in April, which is the main story. As opposed to saotome, who was never mentioned in Tokyo and April.

Since jinguuji and saotome (first pair shown) actually have their own separate story. But it could possibly be that the author created this series first which only started introducing the characters, and then got the green light to actually make a whole new series fully detailing their story. In this series, they give you cut up bits and pieces of jinguuji and saotome’s story and there’s no context behind the scenes, which may make it feel confusing. In Tokyo Rinkaiten, the author makes a longer version and actually expands the story, showing all the context and backstory.

In Tokyo in April, I don’t remember there ever being a mention of an older brother, so I thought ren was an only child since he only talked about his parents. Anyways since it’s not fully translated yet, it’s unclear about the actual order of events, but I can guess based on implying.

Tokyo in April seemed to have happened first (specifically the part when the middle school event happened and ren got sent away). Around this time, saotome was a 3rd year in high school. (Ren 3rd year middle school). Saotome came home and saw the knife ren used on the floor, the event which caused saotome’s grades to plummet due to his worry for ren. Apparently jinguuji first saw him during high school and wanted him starting then.

Tokyo Shiki (1, 2, 4) : shows the beginning of how they meet during college age, and how they got into this agreement. Saotome didn’t get into college, hence him struggling to to take the tests to get in. Which was when jinguuji, the smart tattoo dude, helped to tutor him in exchange for sex.

Tokyo Rinkaiten: looks like saotome passed and got into college, thus ending the agreement with jinguuji. But obviously pursuing a new relationship with him after they get back together. Later saotome’s mother finds the photo of ren, and she cuts it up and throws it away. He gets home and searches for it and confronts them, fighting with them about how could they send ren away, and finally decides to leave home coming to the conclusion that his parents truly are terrible. Other events happen and by the end, jinguuji and saotome are together. Later revealing that saotome and jinguuji were the doctors that hiromichi called over to help yagami. That’s where jinguuji notices a group picture at yagami’s house that included ren.

So the story of the two brothers seem to occur during the same times? Living their own separate lives and finding their own partners. By the time the two brothers reunite, Tokyo in April is finished. Tokyo shiki which includes yagami, seems to happen after their stories.
