Apparently he told his father that Courtney was knocked up so he would approve a marriage to such an incompetent family and allow it to go so quickly.
Probably just the speed part. People in power have many ways of getting rid of such problems. And just having Richard like her isn't enough to go through with the wedding; plenty of books out there where that wasn't the case.
