It's definitely extremely toxic and what the ML does to the MC is irredeemable. But they both go through a lot of character development and the ML suffers from his guilt and does his best to make it up to the MC. It's not super realistic, but I like how it doesn't do a complete 180 and the ML actually has to work for the MC's forgiveness and it takes a while for the MC to forgive and fully trust the ML.
