We can understand Maxi, we've seen how much she's grown, and I commend her for going against Riftan and showing that she really wants to go. That's amazing for her! Also, let's be honest: Yes, Maxi has grown a lot, but she IS a fragile girl. She's just started on magic, and she's doing something crazy. But they're desperate, Maxi showing that she can sacrifice herself to help is extremely precious, as it shows her charisma and strong will.
I also understand Riftan, he's already super stressed about having to lead the army through such a dangerous mission, which he knew wasn't gonna be easy. Now, he's even more stressed, because he loves Maxi so damn much. I'd like to add that, even though Riftan is being rude, in his mind, Maxi was just a petite girl that was treated like a princess, he doesn't know about her past, so we can't blame him for treating her like a princess.
Let me me finish by saying: They're both too stubborn and too in love. They're probably gonna fight a lot, but, it just shows how much they want to understand each other, and how much they care as well.
