What if the man we see crying at the beginning is Shinpei?
Maybe Satoko decided to leave the island with his father to protect him, so her father wouldn't kill Shinpei. Shinpei injured couldn't go after her, or maybe she asked him to not follow her.
Then Satoko was sold and married, and then she started to send letters to Shinpei. Or maybe that last letter was the only letter she could write to him before dying because of her illness. And Shinpei re-reads the same letter, over and over again, because is the last thing Satoko gave him.
PD: Does Shinpei know how to read though? Maybe someone teaches him so he can read Satoko's letter.
