:(

Now I'm not trying to start fights, but this is why I hate religion. It teaches people to fear, other, and oftentimes harm or even so much as kill what people haven't already wrapped up in a neat little bow. Their religion doesn't explain how something works? KILL IT!/HARM IT!/ END IT!

[Edit]:
I'm going to reiterate what I had said. For the sake of posterity I'm going to keep up what I originally posted above. I want people to see what the initial 22 and 1 , along with the comments before my interjection were reacting to.

I am unwell and was very tired and kinda upset with what if just read when I posted. Not ALL religions do this, just all Abrahamic, and most non-Abrahamic religions do. Is it different? It's the devil/demons/whatever other bad things people can conjure in their minds and it needs to be erased, most usually in the worst way imaginable.

Most religions teach people that if something is different from a straight laced, Caucasian, CIS gendered, straight man, with a good fearing, vanilla wife (ie women, trans people, gay people... You know what let's just throw in the entire LGBT spectrum; even white men with anything but English ancestry, practically translucent peach colored skin, with beliefs that deviate AT ALL from the “norm” [despite that literally being ALL people as everyone's religion is what they themselves believe]...etc.)

Basically, prejudice that is unwarranted (I mean yeah, it makes sense to be prejudiced against things like people who are proud to be pedos, people proud of their homophobia or that they are physically violent against women, people who are proud Nazis... Just to name a few, but they weren't just born into those situations.

For the most part those were choices (some previous can't help how they feel, but they can help how they feel about how they feel and every single action taken in its name).

My overall point is that SO many religions with SOOOOO many followers have knowingly and infamously hurt those they believed to be different, in the name of their religion. And that is absolute bullshit!

and many do harm with no particular rhyme or reason- good and bad exists outside of religion-- certain crime is naturally attributed to religion, but it's a bit rude to denounce such a vast belief-- shintoism, christianity, islam, judaism, and buddhism are all way too different to even compare, much less generalize.

I made an addendum. Also, being that the man said demons, it leads one to Bellerive is Christianity or something similar.

Yeah, so blame humans not religion. No religion inheritantly teaches to you harm other. It's the humans who twist it and brainwash the ignorants for their own greed and the idiot sheep who will the worst person because it fits their ideals.

An avenging god who punishes "sinner" is more popular than a benevolent god who forgives and loves you just the way you are. That's because HUMANS are morally corrupt and they like the idea of divine retribution rather than divine rewarding.

Exactly. And if u actually delve into learning the true teachings of each of them, instead of just going off on what others say, you will realise that 90% of things are just practical instructions for regular living.

For eg: in Hinduism, it is forbidden to eat meat during "chaturmas" - the four Hindu months of Shravan, Bhadrapad, Ashwin and Kartik, because they are considered as God's months. They run fall around June/July to September/October per Gregorian calender, which is also Monsoon season in the south-east asian region.

Now, a religious person would blindly follow that rule because God forbids it. But if u think from a logical or scientific perspective, this rule was made when there were no refrigerators. Meat spoils easily in monsoon and rotten meat can cause gastric problems.

Also, this was a time when they didn't have indoor plumbing and people did their business outside, usually near the closest water bodies. Gastro, dysentery, diarrhea etc are waterborne and extremely contagious. In fact, the first ever recorded epidemic happened because the poop of a baby with tummy upset got into drinking water supply and it lead to deaths of hundreds.

So, instead of trying to reason with some idiot on why him eating bad chicken might lead to an entire village being wiped out for no good reason, it's better to scare EVEYONE off of meat for those months. So that even if one guy doesn't follow that rule, his family/neigbours etc will make sure to keep him in check.

It also says don't eat shellfish and don't get tattoos. But u don't see the church denouncing lobster eaters or people who get Jesus/Cross tattooed on their bodies. But gays are a problem? People need to either follow it in it's entirety (like some super orthodox sects do) or not follow it all. U can't just cherry-pick the parts that you like then call others sinners.

Also, Bible like ALL religious doctrines was written by people of the time. If u encounter a rule, they try to think of a logical explanation for it in both those times and in modern times. Some rules might still apply but the outdated ones need to overhauled. Many neo-religions are doing the exact same thing. Use the teachings of the old religions but updated to 21st century.

I agree logically speaking, but functionally, I prefer those who cherry-pick, on a personal level. I'd much rather hang out with someone who doesn't cheat, steal, lie and/or murder, but are open-minded, over those who kill but only those the old book tells them to (yes most holy books are this contradictory lol), rape (yes you CAN rape your own spouse), but don't use the Lord's name in vain...

I'd prefer rather still someone who follows the law and just isn't a dick to people because it's for the best interest of a functional society. There shouldn't need to be a threat looming for ANYONE to not be a douchebag.

Whether there is an overarching being, I don't know and my personal beliefs dictate I likely never will (agnostic atheist), but I don't need to know, to be a good person and I think it's kinda sad how many people feel they do.

As an agnostic theist, I will feel ya. That's why I said, most doctrines need a serious overhaul depending on the times. Most doctrines were just laws of their time, but used fear of God or Divine retribution instead of fear of police or jail. I said in this in the other comment as an example.

In Hinduism, we are forbidden to eat meat during "Shravan" (and the next consecutive 3 months). Now, seasonally, Shravan falls during June which is the beginning of Monsoon in asia (June to Sept is the rainy season), and without refrigerators meat spoils faster which can cause gastric disorders. Most gastric infections are water borne, so the chances of them spreading during monsoon is even faster. Which can lead to an epidemic.

So that rule made sense at the time when even one idiot eating rotten meat could have potentially wiped out the whole village. But now we have refrigerators and indoor plumbing, so you don't necessarily HAVE to follow that rule anymore. If u wanna do it for religious reasons that's your call, but it's not a social necessity like in those times.
