I am up in the air about it. He has much more of an arc than a lot of characters and we haven’t seen where it’s going with him. I mean if you look a Lihito at the end of Kengan you’d say he had a terrible arc and was a stupid character, but it laid the groundwork for his comeback in Omega. Koga’s got more of a sense of steady progress than being OP out of the gate. Also, mark my words, there is more to happen with the connector. We’ve been baited into a sort of false sense of security with him right now, but something big will probably happen in the future with the 2nd connector who’s trapped in the mind right now or the 3rd clone who wants to get the power. I also wouldn’t be entirely surprised if it goes somewhere like Koga having to take down Ryuki or Ohma after they’ve been taken over by the connector.
Probably, but I get where you are coming from. I think it comes from him sort of lacking clear motivation other than a vague sense of wanting to be strong. I guess he sort of comes off more childish and one dimensional than a lot of the other characters. Every other character (even those who’s life mostly revolves around just being the strongest) has outside motivations that makes them seek strength and the Kengan matches. Power, love, family, money, justice, revenge, obsession, etc. In that way, if all the underground matches suddenly ended virtually all the rest of the fighters lives wouldn’t be that heavily affected. However, Koga’s life would basically come off the rails. His only goal is to fight and win in Underground matches. He doesn’t really have much personality or motivation outside that. Furthermore, there’s no real stakes to him fighting either. He literally doesn’t lose anything other than the match. He also rarely really seems to earn things the way others do. You have people who have various physical advantages and pick martial arts or develop them in new ways to their advantage. Koga on the other hand has no idea what he’s doing. He’s constantly asking others and only by them just sort of giving him skills and training as he needs, just because he asked, does he improve. You’ve then got a bunch of heavy hitters who just take time out to train him. I know they say he’s got the fist eye, but it honestly doesn’t seem all that special and I can’t really think of him being clever or developing in new ways on his own. Most all the characters have surprised me with their abilities, skills or development at some point. At no point have I ever been surprised by a single thing Koga has done. Most of the other characters are pretty PRO-active in the story making them interesting. However, Koga is almost entirely re-active. Other than just asking to help make him strong, I really struggle to think of him being pro-active in anyway. Even going after Ryuki he was more just tagging along and he couldn’t even make that decision on his own. But finally, and perhaps most importantly, part of what makes this series great is a sense of uncertainty in the fights. Often times you really don’t know who will win or you think you do and are wrong. It makes you eager to read and see who will win and new characters are always introducing new styles, techniques, abilities, etc and current ones are always advancing only increasing that uncertainty and hyping the suspense. All except for one character really, which is what I think is his greatest flaw, and that is Koga. I have been able to predict the outcome of every single one of his matches before they even start. He’s never once surprised me (except maybe in a bad way with a crescent kick as a finishing move which is lame). It would be so easy to make him a lot more interesting. Let’s say his father’s killed by someone in the underground, but they left him alive because he was to weak and pathetic to bother killing. It’s like okay now I can see why he wants to be strong. Why he wants to go into the underground etc. but right now he’s just so generic
This prop up of koga as the mc or next big thing is odd and poorly executed
