He has really damaged coping mechanisms. When he was interested in Skylar, he struggled to understand those emotions. The blackmail stopped cause he knew it was wrong. He isnt insane. He is,as cringe as it sound, broken. He did feel comfortable with Skylar, since both faked their persona. Skylar wasnt what he appeared either, not a stalker obsessed with his friend. He never actually did anything to isolate Skylar. His inner fears do want that, but he never acts on them.
