I've only read the novel, an ze is mentioned sometimes in the future during flashbacks with his interactions with some people i believe but yea he's dead, tho in the side stories, the little mushroom does go out to search for his reamins i believe, but i forgot why
Also it's a really good story, the summary says it's just about the mushroom searching for his spore, but the story has some emotional themes, some scientific and well, a good romance development too. So give it a go
