It could be. My years of reading manga tell me it is just a thing of the character, that when the situation get serious they just open their eyes a bit :)
Yess I have seen that kind of thing too mainly with witty fox like characters(thus the eyes resembling to a fox).
I've seen them in characters that resemble the "perfect Japanese wife"aswell, always smiling and never stressed when something goes wrong xDDDD
Is her eyes always closed a metaphor of some kind? Like how she was too afraid to face the world before but now she is bold n self confident enough to face it head on
