Humans have created the long lasting legacy of music, of language, of art and of literature :) Think of the amazing engineering feats we've achieved! Think of all the things humans have done as a species, then break it down in to individuals.
Not everything we do dies with us, our beliefs and the opinions we voice get remembered in the people we know and have touched in our lives. Think of Da Vinci's or Martin Luther King junior and what he believed. We are not living to die as the author suggested, were living and breathing and doing and experiencing.
Unlike what the author says (which i think is ridiculous lol) we're not all living in perpetual fear of our loved ones dying, not all of us are slaving away at work we hate and not every person does not believe there is nothing after death. There are whole cultures linked together through religion and belief in the afterlife, for some people there's definitely a goal. :)
You can point out this author has taken a very personal, very skewered isolated perspective and labelled it as universal.
let's say life is depressing, but do we have to be depressed just because life is depressing? You should watch Life Is Beautiful (1997). just watch it, really.. :"( To smile is the true strength amidst all these depressingness. He's just trying to justify his clinical depression by pointing out how depressing his life is or the life in general is.
