She’s the empress because she’s the one who is ACTUALLY married to the emperor. I don’t believe the other girl’s are actually married to him. If they were wouldn’t it take a lot of time to divorce rather than just kick them out? In my mind they’re more like concubines who are just being used, and when they’re not useful anymore they’re out.
