I think the reason why is cause the romance is really ham fisted in its approach? I've seen one panel love romances and they were more appealing then this (and really good slowburns god GOD the eventual I love you were worth it)
i'm less interested in the romance and more interested in the stepsisters downfall plus the fmc's ability
