From my understanding the term "Shota" only refers to a little boy that's still a child, same as how "Loli" refers to a little girl who's also a kid. So the term "Shota" itself isn't child porn nor does it mean anything pedophilic but it is associated with pedophilia because it's the root word for the term "Shota-con" which is someone who is attracted to a little boy "romantically" (yuck).
Though "Shota" itself doesn't mean anything, if you do search it up in manga sites and hentai sites you will almost 100% be given mangas/webtoons with pedophilia, likewise if you search up "loli".
This is just based on my barely there Knowledge and insufficient experience but I hope it helps!
It's not just yaoi trust me. I've been reading for almost half my life and I can confidently say that most or more than half of anything regardless of genre that has the genre "shota" is weird af. There's always gonna be that one chapter...
It's more prevalent with yaoi though obviously since it's about male characters but when it comes to loli it's the same or often than not honestly way worse... Well I recommend just avoiding any manga or webtoon with the tags loli and shota. If you're really curious just read the description and other tags before diving into the story
I'd like to make a correction—
Apparently "Shota" is not the root word for "Shota-con" but instead was derived from the word itself. Which honestly makes so much sense considering what type of stories are under that tag. Sorry for the incorrect definition before. Since I only learned of it's meaning through reading aswell it came with a lot of misunderstanding about the word. But as a reader I really should've just searched up the meaning of it before answering the question-
Again, Sorry for incorrect response eisjwowkwowow
