Riftan (the ML) can be insufferable sometimes since hes really stubborn, but his behaviour can be attributed to the fact that hes really protective over maxi and cares a lot.
Maxi (FL) is a little sweetheart but timid sometimes and suffers from stuttering because of her childhood, other than that her character build up is great since shes really trying to change and also magical elements like mana play a significant role in the story. I would recommend giving it a shot by reading at least 5-10 chapters and see if its to your liking. It also has some smut scenes as well not detailed.

I would say Green Flag but he is rough around the edges and can be overprotective and controlling in the sense that he doesn't want her to exhaust herself or have her in pain or get injured.
So he might over-react but it is with good intentions but he is not always good at communicating his feelings or fears as he is very sterotypical macho man and traditional where he would prefer if his wife doesn't have to be the hero but rather be a delicate lady that doesn't know anything about monsters, the dangers that knights have to go through

I would say FL is climbing out of her shell and her sense of duty and justice is what helps her decide to help those around her and the subjects of her fief as the lady of Calypse. As she gains a skill or is exposed to a new skill if she sees the utility she tries to apply herself as much as possible. I don't think she is a Mary Sue but she is slowly learning and applying her capabilities and skills and is willing to step up which I find makes her a good FL. She isn't the typical Strong Female Lead as other stories ad she does grapple with her fears, physical limitations and struggles with her speech but she applies herself and doesn't let her limitations keep her back. She doesn't always succeeds (and is a damsel is distress sometimes for sure) but she learns from her mistakes. I like following her journey and I am curious where she will end up by the end of the story.

I would say Riftan's (ML) intentions are green, but his execution is red. Which gives him an average score of yellow, and as a novel reader I can only say that you will have to continue to exercise patience with his actions.
He has his caring and soft moments, but because he is a very rough dude, he expresses himself harshly. Meaning he yells a lot and is aggressively overprotective to the point of seeming controlling. This, coupled with the fact that he is insecure about his ability to provide her with the lifestyle that he believes she's used to makes him a pretty frustrating character at times. The more you read, the more you come to understand why he is like that, but it doesn't change the fact that his actions tend to come off as very brash. Despite this, he does have a lot of gentle moments, and he slowly comes to recognise the fault in his approach to her and begins to change. They also have a lot of sweet moments together, so he's not just some big angry husband. I'm just letting you know that he does have his annoying streaks.
As for Maxi (FL), I personally find her to be a more enjoyable character to watch. At first, I thought her growth was so painfully slow that I wanted to drop it (although, that's just because I'm a pretty impatient person), but once she starts to develop, it really takes off from there. From her mannerisms, to her speech, attitude and even her skills (she starts learning magic later). She really only gets better and it's so fun to see her become more comfortable with the other characters and even have some fun banter with a few. Her change alone is what has kept me reading, and just seeing how she handles situations differently now than she used to makes it worthwhile. She's not perfect, of course, and she's still quite insecure even now, but the story honestly just makes you wanna root for her (or at least I do).
If I had to rate them in comparison to other MLs and FLs from similar genres, I'd give Riftan a current score of 6.5/10, with a character development score of 4 so far, and Maxi gets a score of 8.5/10 (might be a bit biased), with a character development score of 9.
