pretty sure it's used for saving, i went through some chapters yesterday and what i got is:
1. Save points change locations with each game
2. You can only save once the killer appears
3. There's always a tape in the player and it contains the previous save data
4. The old tape gets useless or dissappears after using the new one because it creates new save data
5. They can't reload at a new save point
6. putting a tape in for a few seconds can alter the amount of memories = unstable memory
they literally start the game again and again so after dying it's game over and maybe as an addition we've never seen doha save idk if these can clear some of your thoughts but yea
If they accidentally get killed before they put the cassette in do they forget or is it just to save endings? I have always wondered if Doha would try to reset Bada or if Bada will reset Doha because he is slowing down the game play.
Bada is pretty serious about finishing the game but Doha has been suspicious for a while just trying to get time with Bada.
