Man...this story is heartbreaking in many ways. Let's not talk about the dad, any amount of fucked up backstory would never redeem his actions. He can rot in hell for all I care.
The mother doesn't deserve this title after betraying and abandoning her own children she has no fucking right to even dare to present herself before them but well we are human and as the saying goes time will heal everything. If Asuka find solace in rekindling a samblance of familiarity with her mother then good for her. Still she can't force Hotaru to do the same, no one share the same thoughts about people and family.
Now about Asuka's guilt, it is really understandable. She has been manipulated her whole life by that man and even if his death liberated her from that living hell, her gentle soul can't proceed forward with that guilt following her. But her trying to implement her own feeling to her little sister was in my opinion the worst thing to do. If Hotaru doesn't care then she doesn't care. From what we saw, Hotaru is extremely affected by her crime. Her mental health is far from being stable and surely this fight with her sister triggered the guilt sleeping deep down inside her. If she can't stand up from the storm coming she's going to drown for sure.
At last I don't think everybody's going to have a happy ending, at least from how everything's had been portrayed, author-san like to keep it real and mental health is battle of life.
