he probably wanted to be close to his crush before he died, but also didn't want him to grief too much so he chose to act this way
He didn't want him" to move on" he wanted to be able to interact with him but without the uke grieving his death once he's done. But his feeling came through and the uke started to fall for him so they ended up getting close.
