That makes hella sense, minus the fact that I actually think it’s the female lead as the old person in the beginning. Cause it says ‘women are supposed to be objects/marriage tools, and yet, I got married to someone I shouldn’t have.’
so I think she ends up living till she’s old, which would be so dope cause I’m sure everyone thinks she’ll die young due to her illness. I like this theory though
But wasn't that what was written in the letter though? It seems more like ML is reading a letter of Satoko. And it really doesn't speak for her survival that he is crying while reading it , plus our knowledge of her illness ╥﹏╥
Rereading from the beginning and with how much information now, I've come with a theory. The old man, who I assume is ML, is reading a crumpled and old letter surrounded by fireflies. Maybe they had gotten married on the island and decided to never leave, however she had died young from her illness. Now ML is reading her last letter and remembering the days the spent together. So it's a pretty tragic end, real bittersweet.
