Yeah. Politics sucks. Take criminal law, for example. It's supposed to protect people from crimes, how honestly, how many innocents are condemned and how many criminals are protected? Justice is decided by those up above and the common people bears the suffering.
Yeah, and feudal systems were far worse.
As bad as our system is, it's still far better than it used to be. We just need to continue to make it better.
But that's an enormous amount of political will, power, and votes.

You have to remember they were in foreign lands, technically, and what they did can trigger a war.
The punishments are to prevent a war by showing that those involved were acting on their own and punished for it.
He did the morally right thing, but legally he broke the laws and needs to be punished for it.
