I don’t think they’ve developed romantic feelings yet but even if they did that would also be normal kids that age start experiencing with love and they often confuse love and affection
Sure, but you KNOW why they added that bit about them fighting for her. They're being deliberately set up as love interests and rivals who will grow up to fight for FL's heart. Imo it's very weird that every second boy in a shoujo toddler story has to pick up his wooden toys'r'us sword and instantly qualify for a love interest like that or otherwise when they're this young.
