I don’t particularly have a go-to for novels either! I prefer just reading where the fan translation teams post and this site has a lot of nice ones!

Spoilers!!
The sister gets mixed up with communists and she brings some mystery guy back to their hospital and asks her to help her secretly harbor and take care of him(he’s injured). She agrees because she wants to pay the sister back for helping her out when she was not doing well financially(inviting her to work at the hospital). Blah blah, the mystery guy leaves his gun behind for maddy when it’s time for him to go. Then later on, some communist stuff happens, authorities are prompted to go search the Nottingham manor, and they find the gun with maddy’s belongings, because she hadn’t gone and got rid of it yet. The mystery guy is communist and kind of a criminal, so they take her as a corroborator, for having helped him at all. For the trial, Ian paid off corrupt judges and whatever, also got her the best lawyer there is, and she was instructed to say that the mystery guy was threatening her, and she didn’t willingly do anything. But it was against her conscience to lie. If she lied, the threatening/blackmailing would have been added to the mystery guys’ charges, and she didn’t want him to have a horrible sentence (he’s not really a bad guy, just did bad things, plus they kinda became friend-ish). So against the lawyers and Ian’s expectations, she told the truth, and admitted that she willing helped that guy. Even with all the people Ian bought out, she landed 6 months in jail with that confession. And when she got out she flew out of the country cuz she thought she had pretty much cut the ties with Ian, and anybody else there with her confession. Fresh start out of jail ig

idk about everyone else but i never said that she lost all personality or that it doesn’t align with her character lol. you’re right, i agree that the action does make sense for her character. i personally just called her dumb because she immediately left after her jail time was up. i haven't actually read the novel so i’m uncertain/don’t know the full context (just basing off of what i’ve read in that spoiler), but it seems dumb to me how she immediately thought that her connection to Ian and everyone else was cut off just because of that sentencing. she spent all that time with them and thinks that everything they all went through together could be severed that easily just because of a sentencing. they clearly already trust her and i would assume doubt that she was actually involved with the mysterious dude, so it is just baffling to me that she would just leave without (seemingly) talking to them before hand.
ofc i am a little mad by the fact that she made the decision to not just lie and say that she was threatened, but like you said, it makes sense for her character so i didn’t hold that against her too much lol. sorry for the long paragraph, i just wanted to clarify. ╥﹏╥
its ok <3 i was actually just a bit irked at her character being deemed “so stupid” as if she isnt a flawed character and some perfect ideal character that will never make a human mistake. The novel explains things in more depth in regards to her decisions and why she thinks the way she does and hopefully the manhwa adapts that well too!
Guys please read the novel! It’s completed and it’s amazing!! The manhwa is doing a wonderful job at adapting it but the novel has more details and goes more in depth about their internal feelings and thought. The fan translations of the novel are really top notch as well :D So if you’re impatient like me, do give the novel a try
