Well YOI was a big hit worldwide and a large part of the fans were women which includes fujoshis. I found it extremely exciting and entertaining so I'm not surprised it became first place.
Dokyusei is also very popular and it's purely BL so maybe that's why it ranked higher? I'm not a fan of Dokyusei so I'm not sure.
Also, YOI was stronger at the moment because we already knew the plot of Haikyuu from manga and YOI had zero spoilers when the anime was aired. Everyone was dying to know what happens next. And a large group of Doujinshi creators shifted from Haikyuu to YOI.
After all Haikyuu is a very clean piece of work. It's apparently less BL appealing than YOI.
It's really not a question of which is better or more interesting, I think.
Haikyuu deserves first place for the year before but not 2016, because well, we were already quite familiar with the anime of Haikyuu the year before (and knew what to expect from the manga), So it didn't have to be THE anime of the year.
I was checking the Anime BL Award 2017 and... Haikyu is in the 3rd place. Why? Isn't Haikyu a shonen genre?
