He's in love and obsessed with the idea of her, he's obsessed with the idea of someone who would always love and care for him since he was deprived of that as a kid. It's like how some people are obsessed with being in a relationship. They don't actually love the person, they love the idea of the person and what they represent. Hence why he really wouldn't notice much of a difference or be able to tell it's not really her. At least that's my take away from this. Also this story is both dragging and rushing, like can we get better buildup and pay off?
