I think the author is going for the shock value Ai's death achieved. But at the same moment, history repeating takes something from it. It is a choice but what is the point then? Does the circle close or another loop of Aqua's revenge starts? Or is he going to manage to save her and atone his guilt for being unable to save Ai? I guess we will have to wait and see.
I mean.. nobody would expect that
