i think so, look at how sad he looked when he mumbled those words… he’s currently hating on himself for bonding with brett because he thinks he’ll be discarded as soon as he gets bored of him (re: his conversations with the director whose first husband was rich).
I’m actually a bit disappointed with the official English translations. They got several parts wrong and also didn’t use colloquial English very well. The part where he says “timer” should be the word “deadline,” so that should be more accurate to what was trying to be portrayed at that point. Basically because Brett was saying earlier in the chapter that he enjoyed football more because he set a deadline for himself, Hayden later also uses the word deadline when he walked away. This was a case of bad translation.
I think many people missed this point because of the choice in words that the translation had chosen, and it’s absolutely not the first time officials have gotten translations wrong and caused many misunderstandings.
I remember seeing another one beast must die in that they also used wrong words in English lzhn makes lots of mistakes in highly mature stories same goes on do you still like me? Manhwa that one is also mature and English is very off cuz I feel Google translation made more sense in their talk than official one .
Yea it happens way more often than you’d think. And because I’m particularly passionate about this series I hate that they are getting parts wrong because I feel like it’s wronging what the author is trying to portray. This is one of those series that is heavily influenced by the linguistics of it, and I swear even the slightest wrong word can make it completely off. Like the author purposely said they like to leave things open ended, so a lot of what draws us into it is that we can make our own conclusions. But there’s obviously a direction that she wants us to go towards- and I swear that that is where the language plays a big role. So of all the chapters to get wrong, this one was not it lmao

No I don’t think they will leave it an open ending! I just think she is fond of leaving things up to open interpretation :) cuz with this one originally being an open ending but it getting so popular, she decided to extend it, I really hope it’s not an open ending again LOL
I think sometimes the official translation embellishes too much. I do not know the language, but I’ve been using google translate to translate the raws of guiding hazard and then when the official comes out I’ll go compare notes. A lot of times the words are similar, but there are times when they add extras. It happened in Night Song as well. The end of season 2, it was supposed to be “I like you”, but it was translated as “I love you”.
I’ve been reading the unofficial Spanish translations for this, and again I compare to the officials and sometimes I get two completely different meanings.
Ur definitely right in that sometimes it’s them embellishing too much! I think it’s also hard because many Asian languages use context rather than stating a subject directly, so there are times when it can be hard to capture it accurately in Latin based languages. English/latin based languages tend to give a lot more information than Asian ones, and it can be tough to localize the translation.
Maybe they actually wanted to go with a sport metaphor with the use of "timer". It's a thing we do a lot in translation, especially when trying to convey meaning while keeping it short for the bubbles, in a readable font, and trying as much as possible to keep the author's style. We go with synonyms. Also, timer is about the idea of time flowing, of it ticking down until 00:00, a deadline would be a closer to a precise date. Although they could have worded it better, it was still vastly understandable. It can be understood that way : Brett put himself on a timer, the lengh of that timer is however long it will be until the end of senior year. It's like the timer of a match, the moment it rings it'll be the end. And similarly, Hayden is wondering if there's a timer on their relationship, not when it will stop but how long it will last. Or at least, as a translator, that's how i interpret it.
Hmm, wow that’s something I definitely didn’t consider! The use of the word timer as a metaphor. When I translate I always try to keep it as close to the original language as possible, rather than thinking of metaphors. But I also try and think of how the audience would most easily pick up the message based on colloquial language rather than metaphors. I find it awkward to use the word timer there in normal conversation, but in this case I love that you pointed out using timer as a sport metaphor, that’s so clever! It adds so much to the written text and I definitely didn’t think of it that way :)
NO WAIT BUT GUYS. I’m genuinely sad they got the chicken nugget part wrong. Like the fact that Brett can eat 5 boxes of chicken nuggets in one sitting is such a fun fact that he says about himself, but because of the wrong translation that part is completely missed
It may be interpretation, but deadline works as well and it sounds a lot more natural.

Deadline definitely sounds more natural, especially with how the rest of the conversation is turned. However I can understand the use of "timer" and would have definitely used it too if the sentences prior to that were better turned for it, or they went full in with the metaphor on sports
Wait I just re read it , Hayden was mumbling something "timer, that's what missing" was he talking about their deal timing? Cuz Brett couldn't heard it.
