Seeing as he's an immortal vampire and childcare books weren't written till the last century or less ((at least not mass printed ones. Nanies would keep journals but those were personal and a kid by kid basis, not a "how to raise kids for dummies)) he probably has no idea on how to raise a human. What's common sense for us wouldn't be for something that isn't human and also isn't currently living in the 21st century where information is easily obtained and there are a lot more things that we know now than back then.
You can tell that this material is new to him 'cause it seems like this is his first time relying on books to help him navigate. Also, we know from Ronan that all of his children always died young for some reason. Shane has never been given the chance to raise an adolescent to young adult that deals with hormonal changes. Dane died before him and Kane reached that age and Ain is a woman who is currently hospitalized with a terminal illness that is about to kill her.
And before you use the excuse that Shane is a grown man, you have to remember that vampires don't age and mature like humans do. If he's a progenitor or something like that then that means he was born one and never lived a human life. He doesn't know how they age and go through phases. It's why he's relying on the new texts available on how to raise them. He literally has 0 idea on how to raise anyone older than like 13 that isn't currently on their deathbed.
One of the trope that I hate is when parental figure helped their children with masturbating. Like mf you may not have the basics knowledge of child care whatsoever but not touching your kids genitals is like a common sense at this point
