Sure, author deserves it and I personally buy some chapters whenever I can but, not all of us have that kind of money.
When it comes to translations sorry but I find scanlators?(isn't this a webcomic) translations far more genuine. I think polite tone official one has is quite artificial, especially when it comes to Taemin, it's quite hard to imagine him speak in such polite tone.
Oh whoops forgot about the webtoon exclusive thing; I'll correct the "scanlator" bits.
I buy the chapters using the free system in place via daily log-in to the Korean site so I haven't had to spend more than a few bucks to unlock everything.
No apology necessary; I tried to make it clear that this was all my own personal interpretation, perspective, and how it was easier for me to comprehend the story the way it was intended; so if I sounded like I was implying it was a necessity to read the OT than I'm sorry, that's not what I intended.
Taemin still talks like a hard-ass, there're only a few places where he comes off as slightly less of an ass to Woojin in the OT, but it's totally understandable it'd be hard to imagine him speaking any differently when you've only read it one way the whole time.
Actually I buy the chapters and read them here whenever I can't buy them. That Korean website trick is quite useful not only it gives free coins but discounts too. (▰˘◡˘▰) Sad part is 3 dollars equals around to 10 with my countries money so, that is kinda sad.
I know this sounds kinda rude and a little bit elitist but, when I mentioned Taemin's speech what I meant was, he grow up in a poor area with poor family conditions also did not even finished elementary? school. Because of that reasons it's hard for me to imagine that kind of person speak in a polite and well educated way.
Oh wow! That made my night!
I totally know what you mean. This story is FANTASTIC, which is an understatement; I can't get enough of it. I didn't feel right knowing I had a few bucks to spare and was indulging in this glorious journey for free, so I created an account on Lezhin just so I could earn the coins to promote it! Definitely one of my faves, if not my fave.
The experience I have made is that unofficial translations are usually more literal. OTs usually make it a point to translate in a way that fits the language they translate to. It's one of the reasons I prefer reading things here. Also I live in Austria and the German translations are icky most of the time... It's gotten better though, so I still check them out once in a while
I don't agree with the most of the examples. For example, getting caught up in Woojin's pace also means losing control of his own actions. The other examples are just worded differently and I don't see a big difference in the meanings. The tone may differ but not substantially enough to confuse readers. I think the unofficial translator has done a good job.
hey tldr but just wanted to point out that im actually a native speaker and i do speak it fluently and when i translate i translate it more literally. you're free to buy the official translations and i will actually encourage you to do so but heads up that the official ones tends to change the meanings a lot,, so yh lmao im like defending myself (sadness) but rant rant rant ask any korean and they'll say my translations are more literal including the ones you pointed out K NOW I SOUND RLLY BITCHY BUT TY FOR POINTING IT OUT ANYWAY
Though I agree with your example of OT- Ch. 25 Pg. 27-28 being much better. I only understood the ambiguous meaning of "that's cheating" from reading too many manga lol
i don't think that, fallust trying to attack ricepunch translation,
we all love rice for bringing this webtoon to satiate us, "greyland lurker".
Often time, anyone who love words (i don't know how to express it in english so i just use "words") will taste wee bit of happiness only from reading nuance a word can give.
for me, reading different translation on same work is comparable to listen same song in different tones. so, salute to rice for adding this wee bit (i think there's more than "wee bit") of happiness.
fallust, we have same interest.
sorry for my sucky english.
Oh shit now I feel really stupid!! I'm sorry; I wasn't aware of that. I must have misinterpreted something in the notes that made me think that.
I'm actually pretty bummed now because some ppl are seeming to think I was saying this translation was inadequate or insufficient? I enjoy both of the translations, and will continue to read both as I have been; it was for the very reason that the meanings shifted that I felt compelled to write this post in the first place.
That's OK if you don't agree, I was simply sharing how I interpreted it personally, not challenging other's perspectives or interpretations of it. Everyone interprets this stuff differently, hence I added "This could be something that makes sense to anyone else, but I just happened to read it this way and got more out of it in the OT." at the end of the paragraph you're referencing. That was the only example I gave regarding my confusion, by the way. The other comparisons I provided simply for fun to show people how different the lines can come across, not because they were confusing.
I'm relieved you understand that I appreciate ricepunch and their translation! I definitely love both translations. No need to apologize, you did well!
You hit spot-on for me! I am a sucker for nuance, so any word-play or phrase that can make me feel like I understand something on a deeper or more intimate level will tag me, hook line and sinker! I loved the music analogy, as well; that's an excellent example! Thank you for your kind words!
I want to start what is meant to be a fun and interesting topic off with the fact that I'm aware the translator is not a native speaker, so I knew full-well when I started reading this here that it wouldn't be 100% accurate. I'm totally cool with that (or I wouldn't be reading it in the first place! [plus I love their comments lol]); I'm only writing this because it's honestly fun for me to think about. It's not meant to be a dis or anything like that, this is literally just excess entertainment for me, so please keep that in mind as you read on!
I've been buying the official English translations and reading them side-by-side with these translations, and there's -almost- always a difference in how something is said, and/or what words/slurs are used, which isn't a bad thing mind you! (in fact it makes it even more worth-while to buy the official chapters because it's fun to spot the differences or pick up on things you maybe couldn't before)
It doesn't change the essence of the story, or the topic of conversation(s), but every once in a while there'll be a sentence or statement that's just different enough that the nuance of a character's thinking shifts my perspective to an even deeper or more personal plane.
Sometimes, for me (and perhaps it's just because I'm a shit reader/can't understand shit!), there are some lines in the TL that kinda throw me off in the sense that I don't fully understand what the character is getting at, or I can't comprehend/apply it in/to the context of the subject at hand, but the OT helps me clear it up a bit.
One instance of this, for example, was on page 30 of chapter 25; the translation of Siwon's thoughts are:
>> "Why do I need to worry about it soo much because of that guy?!! Isn't this just like getting caught up in his pace again?" <<
However, the O.T. reads as
>> "Why am I wasting my time thinking about him?!! This is just letting him be the one in control!" <<
The second line, to me, is different enough that it changes the implications of Taemin's thinking, or at least the weight/degree of them.
I couldn't understand that by "being caught up in his pace" he meant "being controlled by" because to me, those are nearly opposing things. (I see being caught up in one's pace as coming to equal ground with, but the OT clarifies that Taemin is thinking he's letting Woojin take control, which puts Woojin on high ground instead.) This could be something that makes sense to anyone else, but I just happened to read it this way and got more out of it in the OT.
Here're a couple other's that I'm throwing in because I thought they were fun!
Ch. 25 Pg. 11
(Taemin)
TL >> "Fine. Good for you, jerk."
OT >> "Fine. You got it all figured out, don't you? Smart-ass." (I blame my family upbringing for finding Taemin calling Woojin a "smart-ass" fucking adorable.)
TL >> [Siwoon] "So, have you decided to just accept everything?"
TL >> [Taemin] "Are you crazy?"
OT >> "So you've decided to accept things?"
OT >> "Over my dead body." (THE FUCK TAEMIN, PUN INTENDED??!! lol)
Ch. 25 Pg. 16-17
TL >> [Taemin] *thinks* 'He was a bit dirty but his looks stood out quite a lot, enough to say it didn't match the slums. Looking at him like this...he grew up to be really handsome. ~I'm still resentful though~'
OT >> 'He was dirty and poor but everyone could see how handsome he was. He really didn't belong in our neighborhood. Now that I look at him...you did grow up to be very handsome. ~I still hate what you did to me though~'
Ch. 25 Pg. 27-28
TL >> [Taemin] *thinks* 'It can't be that he wanted us to stand out like he said since there was nobody there. On top of that...his expression. Isn't that totally cheating?'
OT >> 'I mean, he said he wanted to stand out... but there was no one at the bridge, was there? Besides... what kind of an expression was that? How am I supposed to say no to that face?' (THAT LAST LINE THO ლ(´ڡ`ლ))
Shit this is a long post sorry ya'll OK LAST ONE!!
Ch. 20 Pg. 13
TL >> [Woojin] "I think it'll be quite hard on me to see you confused and pained as well."
OT >> "Seeing you conflicted and in pain might break my heart too." (HECK WOOJIN, NOT THAT I NEEDED MINE AT ALL)
tl;dr
it's totally worth buying the official translations and reading the scans along-side them because it's entertaining, the author deserves it, and you may or may not like the nuances of statements or thoughts you didn't get before! (You know you want the gay turned up!)
ALSO if any of you would like me to provide the official translation to a particular page or statement just ask because this is hella fun and I wanted to add a lot more haha.
