It was either her mom or parents that she felt horrendous about. 1st chapter made that clear. Her brothers seem to care about her but mom is a different story. They do tend to prioritize the boys in Asian families

Yeah, my dad told me it's because 1) It's the boy that will continue the family name, meaning the family legacy will still continue and 2) girls are usually given off to their husband's family so that means the girl won't stay with her family so the parents tend to dote on the boys more because they will be the ones that stays. The parents don't have to worry about giving the boys all the love and affection because unlike the girls, they won't leave them. Western family culture is different because no matter men or women, they both leave the parents to be independent. Asian family culture is usually the family stick together so the kids and parents still live together, even if the kids are married. Tho again, the girls would usually go live with their husband's family and the boys stay with theirs.

On a more lighthearted note: my sisters and I sometime joke to our brother "You must get married and have kids so our family bloodline, the [our very long ass family surname], don't die with us!"
